I have always loved the famous quote by the poet Arthur Rimbaud; Je est un autre (I is Somebody Else) – meaning that the inner-self is something else, undefined and foreign. The variation of our inner-self is continuous. Thoughts and emotions are by their very nature fleeting. Self-portraiture has been for me a method of self-examination. I have always been fascinated and intrigued by this creative process in every medium.
Works from this series of auto-portraits, in which two layers of negatives are superimposed, explore the notions of identity and the connections between the inner and outer self. Beyond any physical concerns, I wanted to bring to the surface conscious thoughts and feelings from places deep within and create a variation of narrative images. This cathartic experience unlocked my imagination and released feelings of joy, anguish and longing.
J’ai toujours aimé la célèbre citation du poète Arthur Rimbaud; Je est un autre ce qui signifie que l’unité de soi est un ‘autre’, indéfini et étranger. La variation de notre moi intérieur est continuelle. Nos pensées et nos émotions sont de par leur nature éphémères. L’auto-portrait a été pour moi une méthode d’introspection. J’ai toujours été fasciné et intrigué par cet processus de création dans tous les médiums.
La série d’autoportraits Je est un autre, dont deux couches de négatifs sont superposées, explore les notions de mon identité et les liens entre le moi intérieur et extérieur. Au-delà de mes préoccupations esthétiques, je tenais consciemment à me glisser dans la peau de cet ‘autre’ afin d’exprimer des états intérieurs et créer une série d’images narratives. Cette expérience cathartique, énérant une décharge émotionnelle, a déverrouillé mon imaginaire et libéré des sentiments de joie, d’angoisse et de mélancolie.
