Born in 1969 in Montbrison, a small town at the foot of the Forez hills, in the Loire Department, France, Christophe Agou left France in 1992 and settled in New York. This early voluntary exile, an urge to immerse himself in a completely different world, is typical of the work that Christophe Agou has been developing over the last twenty years: an intuitive and empirical exploration of universes, situations and people that he comes to understand by a gradual process of absorption, not realizing it has happened until he finds himself resonating intimately with them.

Working with equal ease from black and white to color, from landscape to portrait, he does not favor any style, ensuring constantly to renew his statements and the forms of his own vision. He came to the notice of international critics for several works, particularly his series of images on subway passengers in New York. The photographs evoke a sense of longing and isolation. The result of this work has been carried out in a book and published Life Below in 2004.

Over the years, Christophe Agou has been extending his expression into other media, always working intuitively, making assemblages, multimedia installations, films and writing short stories. In the winter of 2002, Christophe Agou returned to his native Forez and roamed around the harsh landscape there; it had never left his mind. Over time, and through the gradual process of building trust and friendship, the farmers and their families accepted him and allowed him to both photograph and film their daily existence. The resulting body of work, titled Face au Silence (In the Face of Silence), was awarded the 17th European Publishers Award for Photography.

In 2010, his new photographs of people and places explore the theme of impermanence to its glowing limits. He self-published LES FAITS SECONDAIRES (Secondary Facts/Side Effect) in 2013. The limited edition book brings together sixty photographs, a text by John Berger, and poems by Daniel De Bruycker.

Né en 1969 à Montbrison (Loire), petite commune située au pied des Monts du Forez, Christophe Agou quitte la France en 1992 pour s’installer à New York. Cet exil précoce et volontaire, cette soif d’immersion dans un monde tout autre, est à l’image de l’oeuvre que Christophe Agou développe depuis une vingtaine d’années: une exploration empirique et intuitive d’univers de situations, d’êtres, qu’il appréhende par imprégnations progressives et dont il ne rend compte qu’au moment où il se sent entré en résonance intime avec eux.

Adepte de la sentence rimbaldienne Je est un autre, Agou semble habité par la seule mais entêtante quête des formes multiples et mouvantes de l’altérité. Passant avec une égale aisance du noir et blanc à la couleur, du paysage au portrait, il ne privilégie aucun style, veillant à renouveler sans cesse les formes et les conditions de sa propre vision. Il découvre les photographies de Diane Arbus et Mario Giacomelli et trouve dans leur travail une émotion sincère. Dénué de tout sentimentalisme, il commence en 1998, une série d’images sur les passagers du métro de New York. Le résultat de ce travail réalisé a fait l’objet d’un livre en 2004, Life Below.

Au fil des années, Agou s’exprime également à travers d’autres médiums, en travaillant toujours intuitivement, réalisant des assemblages, des installations multimédias, des films et en écrivant des nouvelles. Durant l’hiver 2002, Christophe Agou revient dans sa région du Forez et parcourt ces âpres territoires dont il n’a rien oublié. Il y fait la connaissance d’hommes et de femmes modestes et singuliers, dont il devient un proche au fil des visites régulières. Le projet intitulé Face au Silence s’est vu décerner le 17e prix européen du livre de photographie (European Publisher’s Award for Photography).

En 2010, ses nouvelles images de personnages et de paysages explorent le caractère inéluctable de l’impermanence jusqu’à l’incandescence. Il auto-publie LES FAITS SECONDAIRES en 2013. L’édition limitée rassemble soixante photographies, un texte de John Berger, et des poèmes de Daniel De Bruycker.
