In the winter of 2002, Christophe Agou felt the emotional need to return to his native Forez and roamed around the valleys and the mountains which had never left his mind.
He got to know and became friends with a community of family farmers whose identities are deeply rooted to the land. After eight years, this resulted in, In the Face of Silence, which is far from just a documentary about rural life in early twenty-first century France. The farm doors that Christophe Agou enters on our behalf open to reveal the faces of men and women who command our respect and give us pause for meditation.
The ‘matter’ and everyday texture of these lives, their work and the elements, like a saga punctuated by very telling, though motionless, tracking shots, is displayed with almost organic realism. In the Face of Silence is a very special diary about existences governed by the necessities of hard work and the weight of the seasons. Déjà remarqué par la critique internationale pour plusieurs travaux (notamment Life Below, 2004, une traversée en noir et blanc du métro new-yorkais), Christophe Agou, né en 1969 à Montbrison (Loire), petite commune située au pied des monts du Forez, quitte la France en 1992 pour s’installer à New York.
Durant l’hiver 2002, Christophe Agou revient dans sa région du Forez et parcourt ces âpres territoires dont il n’a rien oublié. Il y fait la connaissance de familles d’agriculteurs dont il devient un proche, au fil des visites régulières et des échanges épistolaires. Face au silence, fruit de huit années de rencontres et de partage, ne constitue en rien un document ou un reportage sur une certaine forme de ruralité dans la France de ce début de siècle. Les seuils des fermes que Christophe Agou franchit pour nous s’ouvrent sur des visages d’hommes et de femmes qui forcent le respect et incitent à une méditation solitaire. À la manière d’une chronique rythmée par de saisissants bien qu’immobiles travellings, la “matière” et la texture quotidienne des vies, des travaux, des éléments, se donnent ici à voir dans une réalité presque organique.

Cependant, il n’a jamais été si puissamment lyrique et présenté comme dans cette série soigneusement séquencée et orchestrée par Christophe Agou – un photographe dont les images nous hantent et nous intrigue en même temps. Comme des millions d’autres gens, Agou a d’abord vécu le métro comme moyen de transport au quotidien et a pris vite conscience de la richesse du paysage humain dont il faisait partie.
